The Canal de Briare was built during the reign of Henry IV. The spectacular locks of Rogny, although no longer in use, are still worth a visit. The area along the Canal de Briare is densely wooded and dotted with small lakes. Your journey by houseboat from Briare will take you past numerous half-timbered houses, where you can enjoy the Gatinais landscape. From Briare, you will cross the Loire River south on the Loire Lateral Canal, crossing the impressive canal bridge built by Gustave Eiffel. This is certainly an impressive sight to be cruising across a river in your houseboat. In the region, indulge your palate with the white wines Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé and enjoy small goat cheeses such as "Bouchon" or "Crottin de Chavignol."
