Just a few kilometers from Bézier, the city of bullfighting and rugby, lies the beautiful town of Colombiers on the Canal du Midi. It lies right next to the Étang de Montady, the Mediterranean lagoon between Colombiers and Mantady, which was drained in the Middle Ages by a drainage system. The medieval drainage system is still functional today. However, the drainage system is now used for irrigation, with water drawn from the Canal du Midi. The best place to admire this star-shaped formation is from the hill of Ensérune (a good 2 km walk from the houseboat base). This is where the oppidum Ensérune once stood, an Iberian-Greek settlement founded in the 6th century BC, the remains of which have been preserved. The famous Fonsérannes lock staircase, with its nine locks, allows you to easily negotiate the 21 meters of elevation.
