In Central England, there aren't just historic cities like Birmingham or Manchester to discover. A host of attractions await your visit along and along the waterways. We begin our canal boat holiday in Staffordshire from the base in Stone. First, we head north:

Back on board, we continue along the Bridgewater towards Middlewich. On the way, we pass the boat lift in Anderton: an exciting experience! Once in Middlewich, we turn towards Nantwich to reach Chester. Chester, located close to the Welsh border, is one of the best-preserved walled cities in the country. Its history dates back to Roman times. In the Middle Ages, Chester was home to England's largest inland port, which brought the city great wealth. During the Gregorian period, Chester once again became prosperous, this time as a popular residence for the aristocracy migrating from the countryside. This development continued into the Industrial Revolution, when the city, located between the industrial cities of Manchester and Liverpool, became home to the English upper class.
